Back in March, when the Covid 19 situation began to escalate, the Denbighshire Leisure team came to the sad conclusion that to ensure the safety of staff and customers, our facilities would temporarily close.
Since that time, we have continued to stay in touch with as many of you as possible mainly through social media and online activities, but also via telephone calls and in some cases home visits to vulnerable and isolated residents on behalf of Denbighshire County Council (at a safe distance). We have also been working hard on exciting plans for investing in our facilities and behind-the-scenes projects to make sure we will be ready to welcome you all back, when the time is right.
Our current situation
Throughout the pandemic, we have closely monitored the advice received from both the Welsh and UK Governments. Although there are slight differences between their most recent guidelines, sadly, at the moment for the Leisure sector nothing has changed and we will not be able to re-open any part of our business for the next three weeks. Although this is disappointing, we are all staying positive and looking forward to that position changing in the not too distant future.
Over the past few weeks, our teams have been working very hard on new ways of keeping in touch. These have mainly been via a brilliant range of online activities for all ages, and have included our hugely popular Rainbow Health Challenge, some amazing arts and crafts projects, and our inspirational free home fitness videos. On our Facebook page, the staff at 1891 restaurant in Rhyl are posting a cocktail/mocktail recipe every Friday, for you to make at home.
Our teams have also come up with some great ways of keeping very important initiatives going. One example is our Lost in Arts group for dementia sufferers and their carers. This face-to-face workshop based project has now moved online, but is continuing to flourish. In addition to offering support to vulnerable residents, our Active Communities team have been advising local sports clubs on financial resilience and helping them access funding from Sport Wales.
The Denbighshire Leisure staff have also been looking for ways to show our support for public sector partners and keyworkers. Our technical team have been lighting up our facilities, with particularly impressive displays for VE day and for Rainbow Hospital, whilst members of our staff have contributed to a fantastic Thank You video. You can see the images for all of these on our social media pages.
We are delighted that the feedback on all of the above has been so positive, and we will keep the activities coming for you, over the next few weeks.
Our management team have been using their time to agree some exciting projects which will very soon see further upgrades to our facilities, a brand new website and improvements to our digital platforms. Despite the difficulties we are all facing at the moment, we are still committed to providing the best service and the best facilities for you, our customers.
Our plans for the future
After all the stresses and strains of Covid 19, and when everything returns to normality, we will have some exciting activities for everyone to enjoy.
As things begin to change and some restrictions are relaxed, we are very much looking forward to being able to reintroduce selected services and activities. Dependent upon the guidance we receive, it is likely our facilities will be very different places in the short term, but please be assured your safety and the safety of our staff will remain our highest priority, and we will endeavour to make sure your experience will be as good as it has ever been.
Denbighshire County Council and Denbighshire Leisure Ltd remain committed to providing facilities of the highest standards. And whilst our facilities are closed, we have taken the opportunity to undertake some refurbishments. Two major projects which had to be delayed, are now underway once more. These are the refurbishment of the fitness and swimming facilities at Corwen Leisure Centre and the redevelopment of the fitness provision at Denbigh Leisure Centre. A sneak preview of both these facilities will be released over the coming weeks. Plans for several other major investments are also in the process of being finalised and include a new 3G all weather pitch surface at Llangollen Leisure Centre, an extension to the existing Denbigh Leisure Centre car park, refurbishment of the first floor toilets at Rhyl Pavilion Theatre and a fresh new look for the beach front restaurant at Nova, Prestatyn – hopefully including a new outdoor offer. We hope to be able to agree timelines for these works in the near future and can’t wait to get them up and running. Some great new facilities to look forward to.
We are currently working on launching a new Denbighshire Leisure website and extending our digital service with several new social media platforms for our facilities, all of which will provide an improved experience for you, once our facilities re-open.
We will be contacting our fitness members over the next few days, as we launch a fun new range of fitness plans, challenges and initiatives, so please check your emails and/or keep an eye on our social media channels.
Our message to you
We realise this continues to be a difficult time for everyone, and hope that our enthusiasm and positivity has helped to keep you active and busy over the last few weeks. Thank you all for your patience and understanding. We hope you and your families stay safe and well.
